Description

CLM10 (Patient Signature Source Code): When signature is present we need to use P. should we use blank when signature is not there?

Response

This issue is explicitly addressed in guide 005010X222. CLM10 is situational. The situational rule reads "Required when a signature was executed on the patient’s behalf under state or federal law. If not required by this implementation guide, do not send."

Also, CLM10 is an ID type data element, with only one code value listed. As an ID type, only valid codes can be sent within that element.

Sending a blank (space) when the situation does not apply would not be compliant with the standard. When the situational rule does not apply, this element must be empty/not used. That means it must be skipped using the element seperator if later parts of the CLM segment are being sent or terminated before CLM10 with the segment terminator if there is no more data being sent in the segment.
