Back  RFI # 1136: 4010 NTE Segments in 837

Formal vs. Informal Help Informal Formal

Submitter

Phil Miller

Description

The 4010 X12 documentation indicates that, in Loop 2300, there is a "Max Use" limit of "20" NTE segments (it then goes on to indicate that each NTE02's "Description" can be up to 80 characters in length).

Question: Does the "Max Use" value of "20" explicitly mean that up to "20" NTE segments are permissible PER CLAIM; or, is this "Max Use" limit "PER [some other pararmeter]"?

I realize such usage is not recommended, but is it permissible?

Response

This issue is explicitly addressed in guide 004010X098A1. The ASC X12 Standard permits up to 20 iterations of the NTE segment within the 2300 loop. However, the ASC X12 standard is the superset. The implementation specification identified in the guide is a subset of that ASC X12 standard and only permits one NTE segment per 2300 loop, as identified in the implementation transaction table and the implementation description of the segment.

Therefore, only one NTE segment is permitted per each 2300 loop under this implementation.
