Back  RFI # 138: Negative amounts in AMT

Formal vs. Informal Help Informal Formal

Submitter

James McConnell

Description

I am testing
835 with a clearinghouse that is saying that I should be sending the AMT
segment on claims that are being reversed (CLP_02 = "22"). The AMT_01 would
be "B6" and the amount would be negative. When I submit the file to
Claredi, I receive a warning stating that "Monetary Amounts cannot be
negative in a HIPAA claim". Prior to the request that the AMT segment be
included, I was not putting them out in the file. What is your opinion on
putting out negative AMT segments.

Response

The 004010X091 Claim Supplemental Information AMT segment note 2 on page 135 states that the amount can be 'non-zero' which means it can be negative.

Recommendation

Reporting of the AMT segment in a reversal can be done on things that make sense such as interest and prompt payment discounts, where the negative amount is necessary to undo the original claim payment completely.
Later version of the 835 Guides have a detailed explanation of this in the front matter section Reversals and Corrections.
