Back  RFI # 167: Length of monetary fields

Formal vs. Informal Help Informal Formal

Submitter

John McKenzie

Description

There appears to be a conflict or inconsistency with Appendix A and the IG’s: The standard definition of “Monetary Amount” is being cited in Appendix A (see A.1.3.1.2 Decimal) as having a maximum length of 10 characters (excluding dollar sign and decimal point). This does not match with the implementation guides because the MIN/MAX is usually 1/18:

REQUIRED TS305 782 Monetary Amount M R 1/18

Response

This issue is explicitly answered in all addenda guides in section A.1.3.1.2 on page A6. While the X12 standard defines DE 782 as min 1 max 18, this section restricts that element for all instances as min 1 max 10. This is well within the business content requirements for monatary amounts in the impacted transactions.
