Description

As of November 21, 2011, the Fed Wire and CHIPS funds transfer systems support a new format, Customer Transfer Plus (CTP), that allows for up to 9,000 characters of remittance data to accompany the Fed Wire or CHIPS payment. While the ASC X12 820 Payment Order/Remittance Advice code values have been updated to support the Fed Wire/CHIPS CTP format as of version 006040, there exist a large established user base that is using older versions of the ASC X12 standard that need to identify the Fed Wire/CHPS CTP format as well. Please provide guidance on how to create a syntactically correct ASC X12 820 Payment Order/Remittance Advice that contains the necessary code values needed to identify a Fed Wire or CHIPS transaction using the new CTP format.

For versions of ASC X12 prior to Version/Release 006040:
• BPR04 values:
o CWT (Clearing House Interbank Payment System (CHIPS) Funds/Wire Transfer)
o FEW (Federal Reserve Funds/Wire Transfer – Repetitive)
o FWT (Federal Reserve Funds/Wire Transfer – Nonrepetitive)
• BPR05 is not used.
• Create an 820 REF segment (Table 1, position 50), where:
o REF01 = 54 (FEDWIRE (Federal Wire Transfer)) will indicate that the Fed Wire/CHIPs payment is using the format designated via the code value in REF02
o REF02 = CTP (Customer Transfer Plus message)
o REF03 = contains one of the following code values for the Fed Wire/CHIPS Local Instrument Code:
 ANSI (Fed Wire CTP or CHIPs Remittance in an ANSI X12 Format)
 GXML (Fed Wire CTP or CHIPS Remittance in a General XML Format)
 IXML (Fed Wire CTP or CHIPS Remittance in an ISO XML Format)
 NARR (Fed Wire CTP or CHIPS Remittance in a Free Form Format)
 PROP (Fed Wire CTP or CHIPS Remittance in a Proprietary Local Instrument Format)
 RMTS (Fed Wire CTP or CHIPS Remittance in a Related Remittance Structured Format)
 RRMT (Fed Wire CTP or CHIPS Remittance in a Related Remittance Information Format)
 S820 (Fed Wire CTP or CHIPS Remittance in a STP 820 Format)
 SWIF (Fed Wire CTP or CHIPS Remittance in a SWIFT Field 70 format)
