Description

Are there any rules that apply when there are multiple 2000 LX01's within the same ST/SE? Does every LX01 have to be a unique number? Or can the same number be used in multiple LX01's?

Response

Although the guide does not specifically point out the requirement that the value in LX01 be unique within an individual 835 transaction, the X12 standard requires a unique value in LX01 for each occurrence within an individual 835 transaction. A formal interpretation of the standard issued by X12 states that Transaction Set Note 2/003, as shown in the guide on page 42 and on page 79 in the “Standard” section, and the definition of DE 554, which is LX01, set this requirement for the 835 transaction. Therefore, an 835 transaction compliant with the X12 standard and the implementation guide must have a different value in each occurrence of LX01 within the transaction.

Recommendation

The official response to a formal RFI is a letter from the current ASC X12 chair. This website often displays a summary of the RFI. Click here to view a PDF of the letter for this RFI.

The guide provides specific instructions for Medicare. Other payers should use a meaningful different numeric value for each repeat of LX01. Although the numbers do not have to be sequential, values such as 1,2,3, and so on may prove useful for reference purposes. Unless there is a business need to separate claims into different groupings, all claims could be sent within one repeat of Loop 2000, as indicated in the segment notes on Page 79 in the implementation guide.
