Back  RFI # 217: 835X091 TRN02 Uniqueness

Formal vs. Informal Help Informal Formal

Kimberly Housman

The IG states that the TRN02 (check/trace number) must be unique within a trading partner relationship. I interpret this to mean that a payer can send me (the provider) a particular value in the TRN02 once and ONLY once. Once a value is used, they cannot re-use it.

My payer, however, feels differently - their interpretation of the IG is that they can use the same TRN02 when they "re-adjudicate" a claim and advise us of a new payment.

Am I interpreting the IG correctly, or are they?

835 TRN02 TraceNumber CheckNumber

This issue is explicitly addressed in guide 004010X091. Page 52 states about the TRN segment “This segment’s purpose is to uniquely identify this transaction set” and page 53 states about TRN02 “This number must be unique within the sender/receiver relationship”. This number is specific to the transaction and relates to the entire payment and/or remittance advice. It is not specific to any particular claim. The payer assigned claim number is located in CLP07 (page 93). TRN02 cannot have the same value in multiple 835s between a specific payer and a specific payee based upon this information.
