Description

Hi,

We are attempting to clarify whether the validation of the HI0201 subelement for the HI segment "PRINCIPAL, ADMITTING, E-CODE AND PATIENT REASON FOR VISIT DIAGNOSIS INFORMATION" is considered a type 1, type 2, type 4 or type 5 test. Specifically, the X96A1 IG only accepts 2 values for the HI0201 subelement, either BJ or ZZ... this value is used to identify which codeset the following value in HI0202 will be from ... ICD9 or some mutually defined value...
...A level 1 test/validation is considered "EDI syntax integrity testing" testing....
...A level 2 test/validation is considered "HIPAA syntactical requirement" testing....
...A level 4 test/validation is considered "Situation" testing....
...A level 5 test/validation is considered "External Code set testing" testing....

So if HI0201 were "XX", would it be failing a test for level 1,2,4 or 5 ?

Please advise and thanks in advance,

Brian

Response

"BJ" and "ZZ" are the only values that are valid in the HI02-1 sub-element of the Principal, Admitting, E-code and Patient Reason for Visit Diagnosis Information HI segment. This validity is specified by the implementation guide. The valid values are a subset of the values defined in the X12 internal code set for data element 1270, which is used for HI02-1. Therefore, this is a HIPAA syntax requirement.
