Description

I have a question regarding an interpretation of the IG for the 276/277 4010X093A1. In the 2100C loop (pgs. 68 &69 of the Imp. Guide), the use of the SV qualifier for the provider ID states that the SV qualifier should be used when the provider does not have an NPI #, and the payer has assigned a specific ID # for this provider. Is the intent here such that the SV qualifier should not be used when XX is also given, say in a preceding 2100C loop? Or, can the submitter use both XX and SV until the NPI is mandated?

Response

The ASC X12N 276/277 Health Care Claim Status Request and Response (004010X093A1) 2100C Loop has a repeat of >1 within the 2000C HL. Based on current guide structure and usage notes, reporting multiple 2100C Loops within the 2000C HL would not be precluded during the interim NPI implementation.

This response does not address any HIPAA policy issues related to NPI and dual identification. You may submit questions of HIPAA policy to CMS at askhipaa@cms.hhs.gov.
