Back  RFI # 566: Order of REF segments

Formal vs. Informal Help Informal Formal

Submitter

Julia Dunicheva

Description

Implemetation guide for 834 transaction specifies the following order of REF segments in loop 2000 :
- Subscriber Number
- Member Policy Number
- Memebr ID Number
- Prior Coverage Months

Is it compliant with the IG to send REF segments in order different than one specified in the IG ?
For example,
REF*0F*xxx~ - Subscriber Number
REF*Q4*xxx~ - Memebr ID Number
REF*1L*xxx~ - Member Policy Number

Thanks.

Response

This issue is explicitly addressed in guide 004010X095. For the Subscriber Number, Member Policy Number, Member identification Number and Prior Coverage Months REF segments, the Standard section on pages 21, 51, 53, 55 and 57 identify the REF segment position as 020. Therefore, these business uses for this REF segment are at the same logical location within the transaction set and the relative order of their occurance within a specific 834 transaction does not matter. A different order is compliant.
