Back  RFI # 624: CLM Alphanumeric

Formal vs. Informal Help Informal Formal

Submitter

Matthew Paul

Description

The 837 IG defines the alphanumeric basic character set as including the '.' character and that AN data elements are to follow that definition. A payer has placed a limitation on AN data elements so that only A-Z 0-9 space and dash are possible but it is necissary for us to include a '.' char in the CLM-01. I need verification from X12 group whether the payer is non-compliant.

Response

This issue is explicitly addressed in guide 004010X098. CLM01 is an AN type data element. Section A1.2.1.4 (String) clearly states "A string data element is a sequence of any characters from the basic or extended character sets." Section A1.2.2 (Basic Character Set) identifies that a period is part of the basic character set. The element notes on CLM01 state "The maximum number of characters to be supported for this field is ’20’." Therefore, a payer cannot place a limitiation that any part of the basic character set cannot be supported in CLM01, or any AN data element.
