Formal vs. Informal Help Informal Formal

Submitter

Ginger Wright

Description

NM108 says Req'd if NM102 = 1; NM109 says "Required if the Subscriber is the patient. If the subscriber is not the patient, use if known. An identifier must be present in either the subscriber or the patient loop." In 5010 both elements became required so is that the intent of the standard. That an ID is always present on the SBR NM1 segment and if the subscriber is the dependent or patient and those numbers are the same it might be repeated in that loop?

Response

The intent of the workgroup for the Subscriber Identifier NM108 / 09 is stated in the NM109 note. This note was added as part of the 004010A1 addenda. The NM108 note should be identical, but that change was missed in completing the addenda, creating this discrepancy and contradiction.

Recommendation

The Situational Rule for this data element in the 005010 implementation guide should not be used as a reference.
