Description

CMS Transmittal R1412CP- Reporting of Hematocrit or Hemoglobin Levels on All Claims. For electronic claims (837P), providers report the hemoglobin or hematocrit readings in Loop 2400 MEA segment. The test type is denoted by the value R2 and R1, respectively, on the 837P and Form CMS-1500 claim forms. Test results (in MEA03) are reported as a numeric value (XX.X).
The question is whether or not if the test result is "27.0", if MEA03 should be reported as "27.0" or "27" since MEA03 data element is a Decimal Data Type. A.1.3.1.2 states, "If the value is an integer (decimal point at the right end) the decimal point should be omitted. ...Trailing zeros following the decimal point should be suppressed unless necessary to indicate position."

Response

As stated in the description of a Decimal data element in section A.1.3.1.2 of Appendix A, ASC X12 Nomenclature, in the Implementation Guide, "Trailing zeros following the decimal point should be suppressed unless necessary to indicate precision."

In the case of a test that was conducted and has valid results to a tenth of a unit, the value in the MEA03 should include the decimal point and tenth value to indicate that the results are to that level of precision. Therefore, the correct value to be reported from the example in this request would be "27.0".
