Back  RFI # 728: Multiple Patient Requests 276

Formal vs. Informal Help Informal Formal

Marcia Henderson

The front matter of the 276 gives an example and would lead one to believe a 276 may be submitted with a 2000D Subsciber loop and multiple 2000E Dependent loops. Is the rejection of a transaction for multiple 2000E Dependent loops considered non-compliant?

This issue is explicitly addressed in guide 005010X212. The transaction diagram identifies that the Dependent Level (2000E) may occur >1 times. Also, section B1.1.4.3 states "The HL segment is used in several X12 transaction sets to identify levels of detail information using a hierarchical structure, such as relating dependents to a subscriber." Submission of a 276 with multiple dependents for a single subscriber is a compliant 276 usage and structure. Rejection of that structure (assuming all else is compliant) is a policy issue which must be addressed to the Department of Health and Human Services Office of HIPAA Standards.
