Description

Our organization noticed that certain loops within the 837 HIPAA 5010 implementation guides has the following statement "When reporting the ZIP code for U.S. addresses, the full nine digit ZIP code must be provided."

Can you share the X12 direction in regards to 5 or 9 digit zip codes? According to the above statement, the 5010 imp guides require a 9 digit zip code (in certain loops). Is this correct? Is the US Postal Service updating their external zip code set table to include the 4 digit code in regards to this new requirement?

Response

This issue is explicitly addressed in guide 005010X224A1. Both the Billing Provider Zip Code (2010AA loop) and the Service Facility ZIP Code (2310C and 2420D loops) do require usage of the full nine digit Zip Code as identified on pages 88, 207 and 338 by the notation "When reporting the ZIP code for U.S. addresses, the full nine digit ZIP code must be provided." Since these represent the zip codes related to the provider, US Postal Service action is not required. The billing provider knows their own nine digit Zip Codes.
