Back  RFI # 769: TRN Usage in 270

Formal vs. Informal Help Informal Formal

Submitter

Albetski Allan

Description

The 270 TRN segment for loop 2000C states that Trace numbers assigned at the subscriber level are intended to allow tracing of an eligibility/benefit transaction when the subscriber is the patient.

Does this mean that when the 2000D loop is used the 2000C TRN is not to be used?

Response

The use of the TRN at either the 2000C and/or 2000D level is based on if the person at that level is the patient. If you are including a 2110 EQ segment, you are identifying that person as a patient.

If the transaction is being utilized in a Real Time mode Section 1.3.3 states “It is required that the 270 transaction contain only one patient request” unless the information source desires to support multiple patient requests.

If the transaction is being utilized in a Batch mode Section 1.3.3 states “It is required that the 270 transaction contains no more than ninety-nine patient requests.”

It would be incorrect to submit a 270 request in Real Time with multiple patient requests in a 270 if the Information Source does not wish to support multiple patient requests. If this is a Batch transaction, a 270 request can contain patient requests in both the subscriber and patient levels.

If you are not including a 2110C EQ segment in the 2000C loop, you are not to send a 2000C TRN segment.

Recommendation

Please see the previously published responses for HIRs 216, 257, 298, 523 and 595 for additional details on Patient and TRN usage in the 270/271 transactions.
