Description

BPR02 Monetary Amount (TR3 5010 - Page 71) There are two notes for usage. Both primarily have the same 'meaning' if you exclude the example provided in the first note. If you however utilize the example for clarity, there seems to be contradiction.

"Use BPR02 for the total payment amount for this 835. The total
payment amount for this 835 cannot exceed eleven characters,
including decimals (9999999999.99). Although the value can be
zero, the 835 cannot be issued for less than zero dollars."

The example provided (9999999999.99) has 13 characters. This directly contradicts the note usage of 11 which includes decimal).
Can you please advise what the true intention of this note is?

Response

Based on questions that came to the workgroup from 4010A1, the character count of eleven includes the decimal. The example, however, is incorrect. To clarify B.1.1.3.1.2 must be followed for HIPAA implementations.
Data Element 782 (Monetary Amount) will be limited to a maximum length of 10 characters including reported or implied places for cents (implied value of 00 after the decimal point). Note the statement in the preceding paragraph that the decimal point and leading sign, if sent, are not part of the character count. For example:

· The largest positive dollar amount that can be sent: 99999999.99

· The longest string of characters that can be sent representing whole dollars. 99999999

· The longest string of characters that can be sent representing negative dollars and cents. -99999999.99

· The longest string of characters that can be sent representing negative whole dollars. -99999999
