Description

In the 271 (E&B response transaction), could you possibly clarify the most appropriate location for the employer group name? In 2100C where REF01 = 6P, the REF02 would be the Group Number. For REF03, the guide mentions that it's a free-form description element for the Plan Sponsor Name. Since it appears that REF02 is used for the Group Number, do plans typically use REF03 for the Group Name, or do they use REF02 for either the Group Number or Group Name?

Thx,
Ken

Response

The Plan Sponsor Name (2100C or 2100D REF03) may be used when an appropriate code in REF01 is used. There are no explicit restrictions as to what REF01 codes are to be used in the 004010X092 Implementation Guide, though the most appropriate codes would be 18 or 6P and possibly N6 . If the Employer Group Name were the same as the Plan Sponsor Name, it would be appropriate to send the name (it is not required).

In the 005010X279 TR3, 2100C/D REF03 has been renamed “Plan, Group or Plan Network Name” and contains the following Situational Rule “Required when REF01 = “18",”6P" or “N6" and a name needs to be associated with the corresponding identifier. If not required by this implementation guide, do not send.” If the Employer Group Name were the same as the Plan, Group or Plan Network name, it would be appropriate to send the name (it is not required).

Recommendation

If it is necessary to identify the Employer (not the Employer Group), this can be accomplished using the 2120 Loop with NM101 = 36 (Employer).

There is no location in either the 004010X92 or 005010X279 to explicitly identify the Employer Group Name.
