Formal vs. Informal Help Informal Formal

Submitter

Description

There is ambiguity surrounding the DMG03 (Gender code) element in the 5010 276 transaction.

The element is tagged as a 'Situational' field, however, the situational rule reads as follows: "Required when available from the Information Receiver. If not required by this implementation guide, do not send".

Does this imply that the field is NOT required when the information receiver doesn't know the gender (since 'unknown' is no longer a valid option)?

Response

This issue is explicitly addressed in guide 004010X212. The situational rule for the 2000D loop DMG03 (Gender) reads "Required when available from the Information Receiver. If not required by this implementation guide, do not send." That requires that the element not be present when the gender in unknown.
